Summer Lovin' at The Pergola and Hill Garden

London never fails to surprise me, from the beauty of the buildings if you remember to look up, to the amount of sweaty commuters you can get on the central line when everyone wants to get home for tea.The Pergola surprises as it doesn't feel like London at all ~ but with a 20 min up-hill walk from Hampstead Heath Station it definitely is. It hasn't all been a bed of roses for The Pergola tho, from being used as a dumping ground during the digging of the Northern Line to it's dilapidation during WW2 when people had more than pergolas on their minds. This history all adds to the charm. It's casual nature and lack of expensive blooms make it feel untouched and forgotten. Quite bohemian. They say to get to know a garden you need to see it at every season, but with The Pergola I would have loved to have seen it as is most opulent and it's most ruined. That's without even mentioning the romance. There is something so romantic about pergolas anyway, not the new plastic ones you can get at B&Q, but the old ones. Old ones with a story to tell...On the plant front I went in late August, but I wouldn't expect lots of colour at The Pergola, its more greens and greys. Ferns, ivy, huge and winding branches around beautiful old stone which make it feel loved and elegant. You can actually get married there, so if you can't get hitched at Villa Cimbrone on the Amalfi Coast, then this would be a bloody good plan B.Hampstead Pergola and Hill GardenHampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill GardenHampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill GardenHampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill GardenHampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill GardenHampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill Garden FernsHampstead Pergola and Hill GardenHampstead Pergola and Hill Garden Hampstead Pergola and Hill GardenStar“Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds,The harvest can be either flowers or weeds.”Author UnknownIconEnd-Radish
