Don't mess with them beets

Beets-hero.jpg

Beetroots are one of my favourite things to grow. They are pretty hassle free, the plant leaves are beautiful and I love eating them.

Things I know about beetroot

Don't move them. Plant them where they will grow. My first lot I ruined, as I planted them in a seed tray first and then planted out and they were a mess.Plant in rows then thin them out. You can have two harvests in a row, as you can select the smaller beets when golf ball sized and then let the remaining beets grow bigger.Plant the rainbow variety. I've never found them any trickier to grow and they're much harder to buy. I used the Caboodles of Bountiful Beetroot from Pennards Plants.Eat the leaves, they're tasty like chard, but birds like the leaves too, so you may need to net them.

"The beet is the melancholy vegetable, the one most willing to suffer. You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip..."
